So a lot of you are probably familiar with Pandora.com already (for those of you who aren't, its a website that streams bands similar to those you put in based on factors they calculate which should play songs you might like), but randomly browsing i found this site called Meemix.com. It is very similar to Pandora, but IMO has a better "i like it" engine. I've been extremely pleased so far with the selection of music I've heard in a subcat of metal called Folk Metal (my station name is "Korpiklaani"). I'm stoked, my music library can get old. Sorry, I cannot find it elsewhere online, but if you have some extra bucks and enjoy lit in general you should pick up the Nebula Awards Showcase 2008. An essay by Orson Scott Card entitled Quo Vadis in it makes it worth while for anyone interested in lit.

The book is a Sci Fi awards anthology, and I don't think you'd regret having it on hand, even if you do not read much Sci Fi. Like I said, the essay, which analyzes the history of sci fi and whats next translate across genre and is worth the entire price of the book imo.

I decided today i was going to start filling out a readmittance application for (i already have a degree from) University of South Carolina to get a nursing degree, seeing as how a male nurse can pull down massive cash (heard of a guy that started at 60k out of school) straight outta school and pretty much guaranteed a job.

Anyway I had been thinking about it for a while and was like "i'm gonna start up the application and make a decision by the end of the month". Well, the application has been very much condensed since the last time i did it (back in '02 i believe), so before i knew it i had to pay some amount of money that they did not disclose to me and my application is in for spring 2009 .

The nursing programs are mad competitive apparently so maybe being a) a readmittance applicant and b) submitting so early will help me out. I still don't even know if i want to do it, haha but shit, i've got plenty of time to figure it out.

yeah, just found this today. they have some really cool features, one of which is Weave which basically allows you to take all your bookmarks, tabs, etc with you on any computer with FF and Weave installed. It's an awesome idea and currently in ver0.2.


What really caught my eye though was Operator. It's hard to fully describe, and I'd suggest you go straight over and read their description, but basically it gathers data that you regularly put in and see and shit like that (lets say contact nfo on Facebook for a friend or something) and you want to put it somewhere else (lets say that nfo into some web based address book), Operator concievably will recognize these things and start auto filling them in. Think Auto-complete 3.0.

I've had a strong interest in a military career since a very young age. I've always discounted this interest until recently because it seemed kind of like an "easy way out". I mean sign up and you're in (a bit more for the officer programs I've been considering). I've looked now at the Air Force, Navy, and Coast Guard...

I have a mild form of bipolar (Bipolar II) On my own terms I was diagnosed with this when I personally and under my own perogative went to see a shrink. I've been medicated on a mood stabilizer (not anti-depressant) for about 1 and a half years. I feel better, I was never super suicidal or anything like that, but I'd go into mood tailspins and shit that really just kinda fucked up my life a good bit in way of social aspects.

It never affected my school work (a corollary I'm using for full-time work/job at this time). I graduated with a 3.26GPA in college, and it would have been around a 3.52 if I eliminate the stupid ass dual enrollment courses I took in HS that kinda fucked me up cause I didn't take them seriously, but I started college with 12 hrs of credit and a 2.5GPA .

Anyway, the Air Force basically told me that they only send "mounts" (send their recruits to start training) two times a year, and I should check back in later July/Aug. The Navy was pretty stoked talking with me, and I disclosed my condition that I've disclosed above in close to exact words, though through several interruptions and repetitions of the recruiter. What was she saying? "You have to discontinue you medication for a year before we can go any further, all I can do is give you information." I have currently not talked with the Coast Guard, they were definitely a low third in how I ranked what I wanted to do Military wise.

Most of you probably do not know my Peace Corps story either, which involved a 6 month application process, about 475$ of personal cash shelled out for all the medical tests they required (my insurance fell through at the time). I was denied medically because of my Bipolar, they said I could basically give them "more time" to make sure I was stable (which means about a year they told me). I challenged the decision and with a letter of my shrink that basically subtly accused them of discrimination of the course of two pages, i was cleared medically. Essentially medical clearance at the Wash DC level is the last step you need, you just sit and wait for your assignment from the top level director of your countries programs.

Get this shit, cause this is pretty rich: I get a notification of rejection in the mail less than a week after being cleared medically on appeal. The rejection gives no specific reason for my rejection, and invites me to apply again, but in (no earlier than) a year. You can see the subtext here, I was cleared medically to avoid any lawsuit, and rejected by the program director for no clear reason. All my application stuff stays on record for 1 year. After that it is all flushed and I have to start from scratch.



Fuck all this bullshit, I'm gonna burn some motha fucker down. FUCK.

I hate my fucking job, i cant quit though because I have to first find a job with medical benefits because my medication costs 475$ per 30 day supply. I've been at my cable installation job for about a year without having any luck with any of the job pursuits I've undertaken... So trying to find a job fucking sucks. The problem i've run into most often over the past year of trying to find a job is this: I want to find an out of state job.

With all the tools available there are countless amounts of jobs out there to apply for. Just browse a general category of Monster, HotJobs, CareerBuilder, or any such site and you'll find over 5000 pages of results. There is no good way to narrow it down. If you clip it based on something like education, you might rule out some very interesting opportunities because most sites limit it specifically to that range (not, "Up to College Graduate" but just "College Graduate").

Now I'm the creative type, but i'm not what you'd call a "Niche Creative", you know, like a CAD Designer, Animator, Technical Writer. I'm open to many things (now, i dislike my current job as a Cable Installer, but i don't mind doing the labor, we just get paid shit for what we do). Wanting to find an opportunity, but you don't have a good handle on what you want to do presents its own set of problems.

I'd love to just email companies my resume, opposed to having to apply for a specific position, but this is something more suited to local jobs, as you can go in, get face time, set up interviews, put a face to a resume.


It just fucking sucks. I'm a patient guy, but my current job is really starting to grate on me, and I'm not sure how much longer I can hold out, which is making my search more desperate and therefor more frustrating....


i dono, i'm just fucking pissed something doesn't fall into my lap as many of my friends and associates have had happen for them.



I should also mention my recent past failures during 07 and this early in 08:

*I did an 8 day working interview with an At Risk Youth wilderness school. It was cool but i realized i couldn't deal with the kids at this point in my life. The school was 100% based on positive reenforcement, which i believe in to a certain extent. Not every kid can be won over by kindness. Some need different approaches.
At the end of the backpacking field interview, i was dicking around with one of the counselors stick fighting. The dude studied in a Chinese monastery for 2 years (martial arts). After flicking his stick and going for a lunging thrust, his reaction time allowed him to reset his stick before my lunge complete. I face planted eye first on his stick, yeilding corneal abrasions over 70% of my eye.

*I spent 6 months in the application process for the Peace Corps. Several hundred dollars getting everything done. I was declined from service in the VERY last step and invited to reapply in November.

*I most recently decided to try for Air Force officer programs. They notified me last week that the Air Force is full....WHAT THE FUCK, WE'RE IN THE MIDDLE OF A WAR! But this is my luck, my buddy put it best: "Only you Kevin, could have that happen."

this is an idea based around my NR idea for "The Think Tank". I'm thinking we might as well test out what we can get going on a game idea. Me and a buddy started on a idea a while back, then forgot about it. I"m going to try and start recalling ideas from our concept and see if we cant get going.

All the ideas posted here are tentative and do not hesitate to "re-write" an entire section in here. only rules are don't change the idea of the game (no "y us gunz? letz us arowz! ^.^" without a proper and well thoughtout idea behind something as drastic as that). ##Concept##
Ok, recalling as well as i can. This idea starts off a bit like the Huxley game, but not bad. Basically fully feature FPS with character building in an MMO style. To break away with typical mmo leveling styles, there will be "random" gifts that your character will have by default. I'm thinking some sort of complex algorithm based on how you build your character to narrow the random roll (lets say, you build a 3 foot tall punk female character with blue hair. she would default have a "gift" for certain types of weapons and missions in game suitable to her size). Areas will be sprawling, primarily urban.

##Players##
As i've said you will have a random roll gift on your character. I'm thinking that if the write coding was done there could be near infinite possibilities for the character (ie. small with quick hands [fast reload] good eyes [accuracy]) it could go on and on coming up with a near unique build for that character. There would be some type of balancing that would prevent "epic" default gifts.

Players may also "unlock" abilities in game. I'm thinking there should be your defaults that you can earn constantly without doing anything other than playing along with some branching unlocks that are based on your default gift (kinda like a class tree).

You've probably realized by now the idea i'm having for the evolution of a character is unpredictable, but useful. I would also be open to having some sort of "cross training" (like char with a unlocked ability can cross-train another character with b ability and they each learn each others, neither being as good though as the person with the original).

There needs to be some sort of checks and balances so that characters remain unique, so that "you are your build", or "we need KarmaKiller for this job"


There is one definite co-op force. Need considerations on weather to make this have other groups you can fall into (alright lets think about this as the matrix for this idea: Zion, Merovingian, Machines), i think it would be cool if clans and guilds could basically build this out. AI will definitely be in game and a proactive force.


##Gameplay##
I need to get this idea out cause it was kind our epic deal with when we were planning. Picture you're patroling around a street and you get dropped on by a large force. Now this shit isn't cooling down and you guys are getting railed. You need backup. Enter (working name) Expedited Emergency Command Post [EECP]. Called in by a (group? person?) on a building. The EECP drops down in a crushing style explosion on the roof, unfolding and fortifying the top floors of said building, the building now functions as a spawn point, armory, and especially a special hotspot generator, allowing other friendly units around the world to be notified of the battle.

Calling in something as big as the EECP obviously sends out some ripples, and everyone (regardless of affiliation) will be aware of said hotspot. Now picture the battles continue to grow, three EECPs per side. A war spanning miles. Retreats, looting, gains and losses. It's Mad Max meets 300.

Clans/Guilds would be able to "customize" their EECPs through some sort of credit/buying/points system. From colors and looks to specific function (area slow tick heal, faster rearms, etc). The EECP of a guild could essentially function as a utility player might in traditional MMORPGs, giving passive, active, or reactive buffs.


*Need some way to limit who calls and where. Can we make any building be a EECP? Can we let the EECPs build from ground up (stand alone? guild unlockable?). Can we balance this so there isn't uber factions and guilds?


##Transportation##
Air and ground. No water plans. Ideas welcome. Travel time should be an issue. There should be NPC auto transpo but this transpo can be interrupted (say you know Xman is in metro a. Kill it at stop drop him, good to go. This needs further planning. Requires "vulnerable points" between load/zoneing times. should be a high risk stunt but able to be pulled off by a fireteam style group (3 people))

##Leveling/Character Development##
Need help here, a typical. Think out of the box, bull from your favorite games but make it new.

##Playability##
What we need to make this addicting, entrancing, adrenalin pumping. I've always enjoyed "Dev events" i think this would be a really cool idea to incorp here, but i've got no specifics atm. go nuts.

*Game pages could have "Idea Progress" sections, where selected new lingo along the lines of current game lingo (alpha, beta, gold, live, etc) could be used.

So for a while me and some of my friends have been brainstorming ideas for games (i'm sure like most of us do, we can only dream right?). I have a few contacts from way back in the day of doing what i called "extreme beta testing", where I got on a first name basis with the lead developer of The Matrix Online, had his direct line, gave him community updates 2x a month, etc.

A while back I actually kinda looked him up and talked with him about pitching a game idea me and a buddy were working on. He said send it through. Unfortunately we just got drunk...and unmotivated, so it never went through.


Now with NapeRiot here, it seems like with all the flowing creativity we could get some real stuff kinda going on and perhaps have regular pitches to devs/producers or (keep dreaming...! c'mon!) they might even have some people browse over here.


We have the ideas, with our link with dA we have the artists to even get concept art in should someone feel motivated enough. So i was thinking an open section dedicated totally to this, kinda forum style. I was thinking this would probably need some sort of moderation over what would go into the pool, we could say have a couple "features" per month, that sat around in a collection looking area and some straightforward requirements for submissions (ie, not "I wun mak narudo gamy!@!")

Contributions could be uploaded in any form, from freelance animation/concept art to ideas sent directly to a "project lead".If there were any people in our community that had experience in game designing (concept art or otherwise) they could link themselves to games as "mentors", help out and have a good input with the lead. Anyone with marketing links could hit the Lead up and get in as a "PR". Leads could have other ranks (lets limit it to three other than the ones listed), and people could +fave these games.

1 month is given in the showcase, then the are archived (just not in the showcase), you could browse games by popularity, newest, etc. Games could continue to be worked on after the showcase.


MISC Other Things
*Multiple pretyped disclaimers for games to select to avoid copyright infringement (ie. all names, logos, blah blah blah. we've all seen them) if needed
*A strong copyright for the idea itself
